ECI Freezes TMC Name and Symbol Ahead of West Bengal Bypolls

The Election Commission of India has issued an interim order freezing the All India Trinamool Congress name and its traditional “Flowers and Grass” symbol for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly by-elections. Neither the faction led by Mamata Banerjee nor the rival group headed by Ritabrata Banerjee will be allowed to use the party’s existing identity until the dispute is resolved.

The poll panel has directed both factions to submit three preferred temporary party names and three choices from the list of available election symbols. The groups can also include a reference to the parent party in the names they propose. The bypolls in Nandigram and Rajarhat are scheduled for October 6, with counting on October 9.

The Mamata Banerjee-led faction has strongly protested the interim order and submitted alternative name and symbol choices to the ECI. The rival faction has welcomed the decision and maintained that control of a political party cannot be based on inheritance.

The dispute follows a months-long organisational conflict that intensified after the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. The rival camp has challenged Mamata Banerjee’s control of the party, while her faction disputes the rebels’ claims regarding the party’s organisational structure and constitutional procedures.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition figures have criticised the ECI’s action and expressed support for Mamata Banerjee’s faction. The BJP has taken a different position, with state leaders describing the freeze as having limited political significance. These are political claims and positions expressed by the respective parties, rather than findings by the Election Commission.
