Xi Jinping Arrives in Delhi for 18th BRICS Summit, Anwar Praises Modi

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi to attend the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam, marking a significant moment for the grouping as member countries navigate growing geopolitical tensions and changes in the global multilateral system.

Xi was received at the airport by Minister of State Muktar Tibrewala. India’s Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the Chinese President and said New Delhi was looking forward to constructive discussions as BRICS works to strengthen cooperation and support a more balanced, representative and multipolar global order.

The summit comes as BRICS continues to evolve following its expansion, bringing greater economic and geopolitical weight to the grouping while also introducing differing national interests and priorities among its members.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also held bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit. Anwar praised Modi’s strong global appeal and popularity, adding another notable dimension to the diplomatic engagements surrounding the summit.

The wider discussions around the BRICS meeting have focused on the changing character of the grouping amid intensifying global rivalries and questions over the effectiveness of traditional multilateral institutions. Analysts have examined BRICS’ internal differences, expansion, economic framework and its growing importance as a forum for dialogue.

The summit is taking place at a time when countries are facing complex geopolitical and economic challenges. Xi’s presence in Delhi, alongside bilateral engagements involving Modi and other leaders, is therefore expected to add considerable diplomatic significance to the 18th BRICS Summit.
