India Repatriates Iranian Warship Crew from Kochi Amid Iran–US Conflict

India has repatriated several non-essential crew members of an Iranian naval vessel docked in Kochi as tensions continue to rise between Iran and the United States.

The Iranian warship IRIS Lavan has been stationed at Kochi port since March 4 after it reported technical issues during its voyage.

Crew Members Sent Back Home

According to officials familiar with the matter, India arranged the repatriation of the ship’s non-essential personnel.

Out of the vessel’s 183 crew members, more than 50 personnel remain in India while the rest have been sent back.

The decision was taken as a precautionary measure due to the escalating military conflict in the region.

Warship Docked for Technical Repairs

The IRIS Lavan entered Kochi port earlier this month after experiencing mechanical problems during its deployment.

Authorities allowed the ship to dock for repairs and logistical support.

The vessel continues to remain in Kochi while repair work and other technical assessments are underway.

Security Precautions Amid Regional Conflict

The move comes at a time when tensions between Iran and the United States have intensified following military strikes and counter-attacks across the Middle East.

With the conflict affecting shipping routes and naval activity in the region, governments have taken extra precautions regarding military vessels operating outside their home waters.

India’s Diplomatic Balance

India has been carefully managing its diplomatic relationships during the crisis.

The country maintains strong economic and energy ties with several nations in the Gulf region while also strengthening strategic partnerships with Western countries.

Handling the situation involving the Iranian warship reflects New Delhi’s effort to balance humanitarian assistance, security considerations and diplomatic sensitivities.

Situation Being Closely Monitored

Officials said the situation is being monitored closely while the vessel remains docked in Kochi.

Further decisions regarding the ship and its remaining crew will depend on technical repairs, security conditions and ongoing diplomatic communication between the countries involved.
