India's largest family-run businesses have emerged as an economic powerhouse, with the combined value of the country's top 300 family businesses reaching Rs 138 lakh crore ($1.46 trillion), according to the 2026 Barclays Private Clients Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses List.
The report states that if these businesses were considered a separate economy, they would rank as the 18th-largest economy in the world, ahead of countries such as Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Poland.
The collective value of these businesses has increased sharply over the past two years, adding nearly Rs 30 lakh crore compared to the 2024 edition. On average, India's leading family businesses created Rs 4,076 crore in value every day during this period.
Ambani family retains top position
The Ambani family continued to hold the No.1 position for the third consecutive year despite a decline in Reliance Industries' valuation.

Even after the decline, Reliance Industries remains worth more than three times the valuation of the second-ranked Aditya Birla Group.
Top 10 family businesses dominate Indian markets
The report highlights the growing concentration of wealth among India's biggest business families.
The combined value of the top 10 family businesses stands at approximately Rs 70.5 lakh crore, accounting for nearly 51% of the total value of all 300 businesses featured in the list.
The threshold to enter India's top 10 family businesses has also increased to Rs 2.5 lakh crore, reflecting rising corporate valuations.

Vedanta records biggest jump among top companies
Among the top 10, the Anil Agarwal family posted the strongest annual growth.
Vedanta's valuation surged 75% to Rs 4.45 lakh crore, helping the family climb three positions in the rankings. The increase was driven largely by the restructuring and demerger of Vedanta's businesses.
Meanwhile, the Nadar family, which controls HCL Technologies, recorded one of the biggest declines in valuation, while the Mahindra and Bajaj families also witnessed modest corrections.
India's billionaire family businesses continue expanding
The report noted that 230 family businesses are now valued at over $1 billion, representing a 48% increase from last year.

Rise of first-generation entrepreneurs
The report separately tracked 100 first-generation family businesses for the first time.
Together, these businesses are valued at Rs 77.8 lakh crore, highlighting the growing contribution of entrepreneurs outside traditional business families.

Mumbai continues to dominate as India's family business capital, housing 95 companies from the list.

The report also highlighted Hyderabad as a rapidly growing centre for first-generation entrepreneurs, with more new-age businesses than traditional family enterprises.

With a combined valuation of Rs 138 lakh crore, the country's top 300 family businesses are now worth more than the GDP of Saudi Arabia and would rank among the world's largest economies if considered as a single nation.
