Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined Rs 24 lakh after his team was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 match against Chennai Super Kings. The match was held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, where PBKS secured a strong victory despite the penalty.
This marks PBKS’s second over-rate offence in the ongoing IPL season, triggering stricter penalties under the league’s Code of Conduct.
The penalty was not limited to the captain alone. As per IPL regulations, the rest of the playing XI, including the impact player, were also fined. Each player was charged either Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever is lower.
Such rules are designed to ensure that teams maintain the required over-rate during matches, as delays can disrupt broadcast schedules and overall match flow.
Despite this being the second offence, Shreyas Iyer is not facing a ban at this stage. According to IPL rules, suspensions are typically considered after repeated violations beyond the second offence.
However, continued breaches could lead to more severe consequences, including match bans for the captain. The current fine serves as a warning for stricter compliance in upcoming games.
Interestingly, the penalty came during a match where Punjab Kings delivered an impressive on-field performance. Chasing a massive target of 210 runs, PBKS outclassed Chennai Super Kings with a dominant batting display.
The team’s strong performance highlighted their batting depth and aggressive approach, which has been a defining feature of their campaign in IPL 2026.
The IPL enforces strict over-rate regulations to maintain the pace of the game. Captains are held accountable for ensuring that their teams complete overs within the stipulated time.
Repeated violations not only lead to financial penalties but can also result in disciplinary action, including suspensions. These rules are part of broader efforts to improve the viewing experience and maintain fairness across matches.
With two over-rate offences already recorded, Punjab Kings will need to address this issue urgently. While their on-field performances have been impressive, maintaining discipline off the field will be equally important to avoid future penalties.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on how the team balances performance with compliance to league regulations.
