Iran has allowed two liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tankers heading to India to pass safely through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route in the Persian Gulf.
The development comes amid heightened tensions in the region, where shipping traffic through the strategic waterway has been closely monitored due to ongoing geopolitical conflicts.
Iran’s ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, indicated that Indian vessels could receive safe passage through the corridor, describing India as a “friend” and highlighting the positive relationship between the two nations.
According to reports, the two LPG tankers were granted permission to move through the Strait of Hormuz without disruption.
The shipments are part of energy supplies bound for India, which relies heavily on imports to meet domestic demand for cooking gas and other petroleum products.
The move is seen as a significant step in ensuring that energy shipments continue despite instability in the region.
Iran’s ambassador to India suggested earlier that favourable developments regarding Indian ships could occur soon.
When asked whether Indian vessels would be able to transit safely through the Strait of Hormuz, he indicated that arrangements for safe passage could be expected within a short period.
The ambassador’s remarks underscored the strategic ties between the two countries.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important maritime chokepoints in the world.
It connects the Persian Gulf with international waters and is used for transporting a significant portion of global oil and gas shipments.
Because of its importance to global energy trade, any disruption in this narrow corridor can have major consequences for international markets.
India imports a large share of its energy needs from the Gulf region.
Ensuring the safe movement of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz is therefore vital for maintaining stable energy supplies.
The passage of the two LPG tankers suggests that diplomatic channels between India and Iran remain active despite the ongoing conflict in the region.
Although the safe passage of the tankers provides some relief, tensions in the Persian Gulf continue to affect shipping and energy markets.
Governments and shipping companies around the world are closely watching developments in the region.
For now, the clearance granted to the Indian-bound vessels reflects a moment of cooperation amid a highly volatile geopolitical environment.
