Dark Mehendi Safety: Risks of Black Henna and PPD Allergy Explained

Mehendi is widely used during Indian festivals, weddings and other celebrations, with many people preferring a deep, dark stain. However, natural henna generally produces orange, reddish-brown or brown shades rather than an instant jet-black colour.

A very dark stain that develops rapidly may indicate the presence of chemical additives. Dermatologists warn that some black mehendi products can contain para-phenylenediamine (PPD), a chemical commonly used in hair dyes. PPD is a known skin sensitiser and can trigger allergic reactions.

Exposure may lead to contact dermatitis, causing redness, itching, burning, swelling and blisters at the application site. In some cases, reactions can spread beyond the area where mehendi was applied. Rare reactions may include hives or deeper swelling of the skin.

Another concern is sensitisation. Once someone develops an allergy to PPD, the immune system may react to future exposure. Since the chemical can also be found in certain hair dyes and other products, an allergy triggered by black mehendi may have implications beyond the temporary design.

The colour of mehendi should therefore not be treated as a measure of quality. Products promising an unusually dark stain within a short time should be approached cautiously, particularly when their ingredients are unclear.

If itching, burning, swelling or blisters develop after application, further exposure should be avoided and the affected area should not be scratched. Severe swelling, widespread reactions or breathing difficulties require prompt medical attention.

With festive occasions such as Ganesh Chaturthi and Karwa Chauth increasing mehendi use, choosing natural henna from a reliable source can help reduce unnecessary chemical exposure. A natural reddish-brown stain may be less intense, but darker does not necessarily mean better or safer.
