IRIS Dena Sinking May Be Illegal, Says Sri Lankan MP Namal Rajapaksa

Namal Rajapaksa, a Member of Parliament from Sri Lanka, said the sinking of the Iranian warship IRIS Dena by a US submarine raises ethical and legal concerns.

Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2026, Rajapaksa stated that the legality of the attack could be debated under international law.

The incident occurred in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka’s southern coast and has drawn global attention amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States.

Deadly Naval Incident Near Sri Lanka

According to officials, the Iranian Moudge-class frigate IRIS Dena sank after being struck by a US submarine on March 4.

The attack reportedly took place about 40 nautical miles off Sri Lanka’s coast.

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath informed parliament that around 180 personnel were on board the ship, and at least 87 people lost their lives in the incident.

Questions Over Legality

Namal Rajapaksa said the incident raised important questions regarding international maritime law and the rules governing naval engagements.

While acknowledging the complex geopolitical environment, he noted that such actions could be scrutinised under global legal frameworks.

Following the incident, Pete Hegseth, the US Defence Secretary, confirmed that an American submarine carried out the strike on the Iranian vessel.
