Jose Mourinho Mocks Manchester City Financial Case, Says Verdict Could Outlast Him

Jose Mourinho has joked about the prolonged legal dispute involving Manchester City and the Premier League.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has taken a humorous swipe at the Manchester City financial case, joking that the legal dispute could last longer than his lifetime. His comments came after an independent commission found the Premier League club responsible for multiple breaches of financial regulations, with City challenging the ruling through an appeal.

Speaking to Italy’s Corriere dello Sport, Mourinho said he preferred to laugh about the situation, pointing to the possibility of a lengthy process involving a verdict followed by further appeals.

“I think we will eventually get an ending, but we are both in our 60s and we'll need to be lucky enough to still be around when the final verdict arrives,” Mourinho said.

“There will be a verdict, then appeals, then more appeals.”

What Is the Manchester City Financial Case?

The dispute centres on allegations concerning Manchester City’s financial reporting and compliance with Premier League regulations between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.

According to the supplied report, an independent commission found the club guilty of all charges relating to financial rule violations and found breaches in three of four charges concerning its alleged failure to cooperate with the investigation.

The Premier League alleged that City used commercial arrangements it described as “sham” to overstate income and underreport expenses by more than £900 million over nearly a decade. The league argued that the alleged practices resulted in inaccurate financial disclosures and breaches of spending regulations.

Manchester City has denied wrongdoing and appealed the decision. The club’s appeal means the matter remains subject to further legal proceedings, and the final outcome is yet to be determined.

Mourinho’s History With Manchester City

Mourinho’s remarks carry added context because of his time managing Manchester United between 2016 and 2018. During the 2017-18 Premier League season, his United side finished second behind Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

His latest comments focused on the expected length of the proceedings rather than offering a detailed assessment of the allegations or the commission’s findings.

The case has attracted significant attention because of the potential implications for English football and the league’s financial regulations. However, the eventual consequences for Manchester City will depend on the outcome of the ongoing appeal process.

Manchester City’s Focus Turns to Liverpool

Away from the legal dispute, City remain focused on their domestic campaign. According to the supplied report, the club had won all five of its opening matches and was preparing to face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, October 11, 2026.

While the team continues its season, the financial case remains unresolved. Mourinho’s remarks have added another layer of attention to a dispute whose final conclusion could take considerable time.
