The NZ vs IND T20I series has suffered an early setback for New Zealand, with Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes ruled out of the five-match contest because of injuries. New Zealand Cricket confirmed on October 9 that Chapman sustained a hamstring injury, while Foulkes injured his hip flexor.
The Black Caps have called up all-rounder Josh Clarkson and fast bowler Blair Tickner to replace the injured players ahead of their challenging assignment against India.
Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes Ruled Out
Chapman tore his left hamstring while playing in the inaugural European T20 Premier League. The injury will keep him out of the T20I series against India, although he is expected to recover in time for the subsequent five-match ODI series.
Foulkes, meanwhile, injured his right hip flexor during a training session with Canterbury. His return timeline remains uncertain, with New Zealand Cricket yet to establish when the fast bowler will be available again.
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter expressed disappointment over the injuries but welcomed the opportunity to bring Clarkson and Tickner into the squad.
“I’m gutted for Mark and Zak and I wish them both a smooth recovery,” Walter said.
He added that the team was fortunate to have the experience of Clarkson and Tickner available, noting that both players were excited about the upcoming series.
India and New Zealand Prepare for T20I Contest
The five-match T20I series is scheduled to begin on October 22, renewing the rivalry between the two sides following their meeting in the T20 World Cup final earlier in 2026. India won that final and will aim to carry their momentum into the upcoming contest.
Mitchell Santner will captain New Zealand, with the squad combining established international players and emerging talent. Opening batters Tim Seifert and Finn Allen are among the players to watch.
The T20Is will be played across Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton. The tour will also feature five ODIs and two Test matches, making it an extended international assignment for both teams.
Updated New Zealand Squad for India T20Is
New Zealand’s revised squad comprises:
Mitchell Santner (captain), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Josh Clarkson, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Bevon Jacobs, Kyle Jamieson, Adam Milne, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Tim Seifert, Nathan Smith and Blair Tickner.
With two players sidelined, New Zealand will look to maintain squad balance as preparations continue for the series against India.
