Kylian Mbappe delivered a sensational second-half performance, scoring a hat-trick as Real Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu to maintain their perfect start to the LaLiga season under Jose Mourinho.
The victory gave Real Madrid their second consecutive win of the campaign and helped Mourinho’s side move to the top of the early league standings. However, the match was not entirely comfortable for the hosts, who struggled for rhythm during the opening stages and were jeered by sections of the home crowd.
Mbappe opened the scoring in the 40th minute after Federico Valverde released him into the penalty area. The French forward cut inside before firing into the top corner, giving Madrid the breakthrough they needed.
Real Sociedad responded quickly, with Luka Sucic scoring four minutes later to level the match and ensure the teams went into the break on equal terms.
Real Madrid returned with greater intensity in the second half, and Mbappe once again took centre stage. He combined with Jude Bellingham before finishing low to restore Madrid’s lead around the hour mark.
Bellingham was again involved when Vinicius Jr extended Real Madrid’s advantage, putting the hosts firmly in control of the contest.
Mbappe completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute after Vinicius created another opening for the French superstar. Mbappe calmly lifted the ball over goalkeeper Alex Remiro to seal an emphatic victory.
The 27-year-old also caught the attention of fans with his celebration after completing the treble. Instead of using his usual celebration, Mbappe spread his arms in a gesture reminiscent of Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous aeroplane celebration during his time at Real Madrid.
Mourinho praised Mbappe after the match, highlighting his ability to score, create chances and influence the game even when the team is under pressure. The Portuguese manager also said he believes the French forward is highly motivated to build his own legacy at the Spanish giants.
The victory followed Real Madrid’s opening 2-1 win over Espanyol, giving Mourinho a perfect start after returning for another spell in charge of the club.
Despite the convincing scoreline, Real Sociedad created several dangerous moments early in the match, exposing some defensive vulnerabilities in the Madrid side. Mourinho acknowledged that his team still has areas to improve but welcomed the reaction from his players after a difficult opening period.
Real Madrid will now turn their attention to their next LaLiga fixture against Real Betis on August 30, where Mourinho’s side will aim to continue its winning run and make it three victories from three matches.
