Kaif Slams KKR for Releasing Andre Russell Before IPL 2026

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has strongly criticised Kolkata Knight Riders’ decision to release star all-rounder Andre Russell ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, calling it a shocking move that could hurt the franchise. Russell, who spent 12 seasons with KKR, remains one of the most influential players in the team’s history, winning two IPL titles and producing several match-defining performances.

Russell, retained for ₹12 crore ahead of IPL 2025, was surprisingly released despite being one of the most impactful lower-order hitters in T20 cricket. Kaif, speaking on his YouTube channel, described Russell as a “once-in-a-generation” player whose contributions cannot be replaced easily.

Kaif suggested that the decision may have been influenced by Abhishek Nayar, who was appointed KKR’s head coach for the upcoming season.
“Russell’s release is not right. For a player of his calibre, ₹12 crore is not much. He is a once-in-a-generation performer,” Kaif said.
He added that experienced players often thrive in the IPL, and Russell’s match-winning ability made him indispensable despite inconsistent form at times.

"Even Four Cameron Greens Can't Replace Russell"

KKR enter the IPL 2026 auction with ₹64.3 crore in their purse and six overseas slots to fill. Many believe their primary target could be Australian all-rounder Cameron Green.

However, Kaif argued that Green cannot fill Russell's void — not even with multiple players of his type.
“The quality and power Russell brings… even four players like Cameron Green cannot match that. There are very few number-seven batters who can win games from nowhere like he has,” he added.

Kaif believes KKR should make every effort to buy Russell back at the auction in Abu Dhabi on November 16, stating that KKR owe much of their legacy to his explosive hitting and wicket-taking ability.

With KKR entering a new coaching era and carrying significant auction capital, how they rebuild after parting ways with one of their most iconic players will be a key storyline heading into the 2026 season.
