Live-Action Moana Teaser: Catherine Leads, Johnson Returns

Disney has unveiled the first teaser for its upcoming live-action Moana, introducing newcomer Catherine Laga‘aia as the courageous Polynesian heroine while Dwayne Johnson returns as the charismatic demigod Maui. Set for a July 10, 2026 theatrical release, the remake aims to honour Pacific Island culture while reimagining the beloved 2016 animated classic.

The teaser opens with Laga‘aia delivering lines from the iconic song “How Far I’ll Go”, evoking nostalgia for fans of the original. Quick glimpses of familiar characters — including Hei-Hei and Maui — hint at a faithful reinterpretation packed with emotional depth and cultural pride.

Laga‘aia, who has roots in Samoa, shared her excitement about taking on the role. She said she is honoured to portray a character that celebrates Pacific Island identity and hopes to inspire young girls who see themselves in Moana’s story.

The cast features:

  • John Tui as Chief Tui

  • Frankie Adams as Sina

  • Rena Owen as Gramma Tala

The live-action adaptation is directed by Thomas Kail, with the screenplay co-written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller. Returning from the original film is composer Mark Mancina, with Lin-Manuel Miranda joining the project as a producer.

Announced in 2023, the remake marks Disney’s quickest transition from animation to live-action, releasing just before the animated film’s 10-year anniversary. With its rich cultural narrative, powerful music and a charismatic cast, the live-action Moana is shaping up to be one of Disney’s most anticipated releases.
