US lawmakers and advocacy groups have condemned an alleged shooting plot targeting the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Aurora, Illinois.

An alleged Illinois Hindu temple shooting plot targeting the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Aurora was thwarted after a 19-year-old suspect’s firearm reportedly jammed and failed to fire. The teenager was arrested in Palatine, near Chicago, and appeared in court on October 14, according to the reported details of the case.

The suspect faces one count of making a terrorist threat and one count of unlawful possession of weapons. The allegations have prompted concern among US lawmakers and advocacy organisations over threats against Hindu places of worship and rising hostility towards Indian Americans.

US Lawmakers Condemn Alleged Temple Attack Plot

Several lawmakers, including Senators Chuck Schumer, John Cornyn and Jacky Rosen, praised law enforcement for its intervention.

Schumer said anti-Indian and anti-Hindu rhetoric had reached alarming levels and warned that hatred was increasingly translating into violence. He reiterated his commitment to protecting the right of people of all backgrounds to practise their faith openly.

Rosen also condemned the alleged plot, saying religious communities should not be targeted because of their identity.

Congressman Bill Foster called on people to speak out against hatred and bigotry, while Congressman Tom Suozzi warned that divisive rhetoric targeting people because of their race, religion or background could deepen social divisions.

Advocacy Groups Raise Concerns Over Anti-Hindu Hatred

The Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) expressed concern about the alleged targeting of a place of worship.

The congressional caucus said the incident highlighted the dangers posed by white supremacist ideology and called for people to be able to worship without fear. It also cited a reported 240% increase in anti-South Asian hate speech on X over two years, attributing the trend partly to influential figures amplifying racist and xenophobic rhetoric.

Congressman Greg Stanton described the alleged plot as an act of white supremacist hate against Indian Americans, while Congressman Jonathan Jackson called on President Donald Trump to condemn what he characterised as white supremacist violence.

Indian-American Community Expresses Concern

The Pakistani-American Public Affairs Committee also voiced concern over the alleged plot, noting that Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and his family were present at the temple.

The incident has renewed attention on the security of religious institutions and the protection of minority communities in the United States.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

The 19-year-old suspect has been charged, but the allegations remain subject to legal proceedings. The reported failure of the firearm to discharge was central to the account of how the alleged attack was prevented.

Lawmakers and advocacy groups have called for continued efforts to counter religious hatred and protect places of worship across communities.
