Los Angeles County officials have declared a local state of emergency in response to ongoing federal immigration raids, aiming to provide relief and support to families facing fear and financial hardship. The motion was approved on Tuesday in a 4–1 vote, with Supervisor Kathryn Barger casting the sole dissenting vote, according to the Associated Press.

The emergency declaration gives county authorities the power to direct resources to residents most affected by the crackdown, including potential rent relief for families struggling to pay bills. Supervisors Lindsey Horvath and Janice Hahn highlighted the widespread fear and disruption caused by the raids, which have unsettled households and businesses across the region.

Impact on Immigrant Communities

Since June, federal raids targeting immigrants without legal status have intensified, affecting workplaces, bus stops, farms, and retail locations such as Home Depot. Some US citizens were reportedly detained in error.

The raids have left many residents afraid to leave their homes, canceled public events, and prompted cities to suspend celebrations and gatherings. In August alone, over 5,000 arrests occurred in Los Angeles County, where roughly a third of the 10 million residents are foreign-born.

Supervisor Hahn emphasized the human toll: “We have residents afraid to leave their homes… entire families who are destitute because their fathers or mothers have been taken from their workplaces and they have no way to pay rent or put food on their table.”

What the Declaration Enables

The emergency declaration allows the county to access state funding for legal aid and support programs. Rent assistance will be accessible through an online application expected within two months. The measure may also lead to an eviction moratorium, pending a separate Board of Supervisors vote.
