US DHS Faces Backlash Over AI Transformers Poster Targeting 'Mr Singh'

The US Department of Homeland Security is facing widespread criticism over an AI-generated poster styled after the Transformers franchise that appeared to target Indian-origin truck drivers, particularly those with the surname Singh, amid the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.

The graphic, shared by the official DHS account on X, was designed like a movie poster titled "Transformers: Age of Deportations". It featured a large Transformer carrying a DHS insignia facing a Sikh man wearing a head covering.

The poster included the message, "America for Americans. Get off our roads; you don't know how to drive, Mr Singh." It also encouraged people to "self-deport" and called on the public to report "illegal aliens on American roads" through a hotline.

The department also adapted dialogue associated with Optimus Prime for its immigration enforcement messaging, replacing references to the planet and humanity with language focused on the United States and Americanism.

The post drew strong reactions from Sikh and Punjabi Americans and other social media users, who accused DHS of relying on racial stereotypes and using demeaning imagery against the Sikh community.

Sikh-American news anchor Alec Nolan criticised the graphic and described it as racist and demeaning toward people with the surname Singh. Nolan also shared his family's history in the United States, saying his grandfather, Dan Singh, and great-grandfather, Katha Singh, had come to America from India. He said his grandfather later worked as a truck driver.

Other social media users questioned the use of an AI-generated movie-style graphic in an immigration enforcement campaign. Some urged DHS to focus on alleged commercial driving licence fraud rather than what they described as racist messaging.

The phrase "America for Americans" also triggered criticism, with users challenging the implication that immigrants do not belong in the country. Others mocked the choice of Transformers, pointing to the irony of using fictional extraterrestrial characters in an anti-immigration campaign.

One widely shared response joked that the Transformers themselves were "illegal aliens" who arrived on Earth without visas.

Sikh and Punjabi Americans have a significant presence in the US trucking industry, with Sikh advocacy groups estimating that they account for around 20 per cent of truck drivers in the country.

The controversy comes amid the Trump administration's broader immigration enforcement drive, which has increasingly focused on undocumented immigrants and immigrant truck drivers.

The DHS poster also appeared shortly after the death of Peter Cullen, the veteran voice actor best known for providing the iconic voice of Optimus Prime. Cullen died on August 26 at the age of 85.
