Malaika Arora Opens Up on Overcoming Self-Doubt Amid Public Criticism

Actor Malaika Arora recently spoke candidly about facing public scrutiny and overcoming self-doubt, emphasizing the importance of embracing her true self. In an interview with Hindustan Times, she reflected on the criticism she faced over her career choices, relationships, and bold fashion sense.

She said, “It was tough because people love to tell you what you should or shouldn’t be. I was judged for my career, my clothes, my relationships – you name it. But the day I stopped explaining myself was the day I felt free. My biggest takeaway? The only narrative that matters is the one you write for yourself.”

On being labeled “too bold” or “too outspoken,” Malaika added, “I wear it like a crown now. If I’m ‘too much’ for someone, they’re probably not enough for me.”

She emphasized that real confidence comes from living authentically rather than performing for others. “Self-doubt is human — it never really disappears. There are days when I question myself, just like anyone else. But over the years, I’ve learned to meet those moments with kindness rather than criticism. Confidence, for me, isn’t about never doubting — it’s about moving forward with grace despite it,” she explained.

Malaika began her career in modelling and as an MTV India VJ before gaining fame with the music video ‘Gur Nalon Ishq Mitha’ (1997) and the iconic dance track ‘Chhaiya Chhaiya’ from Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se.

The 51-year-old was previously married to actor Arbaaz Khan, with whom she has a son, Arhaan. The couple separated in March 2016. Arbaaz later married Shura Khan in December 2023. Malaika was also in a relationship with actor Arjun Kapoor, which ended in 2024.
