A massive 50-metre-deep sinkhole opened on Wednesday near Vajira Hospital in Bangkok’s Samsen Road area, swallowing vehicles and electricity poles, and prompting authorities to evacuate patients and nearby residents.
Footage of the sinkhole, which formed at around 7 am, shows water gushing from ruptured pipes and live power cables dangling dangerously. A white truck was seen teetering at the edge of the crater, while traffic ground to a halt.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed that there were no casualties, although three vehicles were damaged. Outpatient services at Vajira Hospital have been suspended until tomorrow, while emergency and inpatient care continues.
Officials linked the sinkhole to construction work on a nearby railway station, which caused the road collapse. Authorities have sealed off the area and are assessing further damage.
