Matt Renshaw has made a remarkable leap in the latest ICC Test rankings following his match-winning performance in Australia’s 214-run victory over South Africa in Durban. The left-handed batter climbed 149 places to reach 49th in the Test batting rankings after producing a career-best performance that helped Australia take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Renshaw was instrumental in Australia’s first-innings recovery after the visitors slipped to 124 for six. His composed knock of 190 helped Australia post 390, rescuing the innings under pressure and putting the team in a stronger position.
The innings marked Renshaw’s first Test century since January 2017, when he scored his maiden hundred against Pakistan in Sydney. Nearly a decade later, the 30-year-old registered his second Test century, surpassing his previous best score of 184.
Renshaw’s Durban Performance Earns Player of the Match
Renshaw continued his impressive form in the second innings, scoring 82 as Australia declared at 314 for six and set South Africa a challenging target of 421 runs.
His combined contribution of 272 runs across both innings earned him the Player of the Match award. He also contributed with the ball, taking two wickets as Australia bowled South Africa out for 206 to secure a comprehensive victory.
The performance not only strengthened Australia’s position in the series but also significantly improved Renshaw’s standing in the ICC rankings.
Labuschagne and Hazlewood Also Gain Ground
Renshaw was not the only Australian to benefit from the latest rankings update. Marnus Labuschagne moved up four places to 34th among Test batters.
South African opener Aiden Markram also gained four positions, moving into a tie for 10th in the batting rankings.
Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood made progress in the Test bowling rankings after delivering a decisive performance on the final day in Durban. His figures of six for 49 helped dismantle South Africa’s lower order and secure Australia’s victory.
Hazlewood climbed two places to seventh, while teammate Mitchell Starc continued to lead the Test bowling rankings.
Australia Prepare for the Second Test
Australia will look to maintain their momentum in the second Test against South Africa in Gqeberha, scheduled to begin on October 18.
For Renshaw, the Durban performance offers an opportunity to build on a long-awaited return to Test-century form. His latest rankings rise reflects the impact of his innings and gives Australia another encouraging development as the series continues.
