AUS vs BAN 2nd Test: Matt Renshaw Returns, Nathan Lyon Retained in Australia XI

Australia have made a solitary change to their playing XI for the crucial second Test against Bangladesh in Mackay, recalling Matt Renshaw to open the batting.

Renshaw replaces Jake Weatherald, who has been left out after featuring in the opening Test. The change comes after Australia suffered a surprise defeat in Darwin and now need a victory in Mackay to level the two-match series.

The hosts also considered a major change to their bowling combination, with discussions over whether veteran spinner Nathan Lyon could be replaced by Scott Boland as Australia explored the possibility of fielding an all-pace attack.

However, the selectors ultimately decided to retain Lyon.

Matt Renshaw Returns to Australia's Opening Role

The 30-year-old returns to the position where he began his Test career and will open the innings alongside Travis Head.

Renshaw last played Test cricket for Australia in 2023, when he featured in the middle order during the tour of India. His return to the opening position brings back memories of his breakthrough 2016–17 Test season, when he scored his maiden Test century against Pakistan.

Australia will now hope that Renshaw can provide greater stability at the top of the order following their disappointing performance in the opening Test.

Nathan Lyon Retains His Place

Australia seriously considered changing their bowling combination for the Mackay Test.

Conditions in central Queensland had raised the possibility of an all-seam attack featuring Scott Boland alongside Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

However, leaving Lyon out of a red-ball Test while fully fit would have been a significant decision, and Australia eventually opted to stick with the experienced off-spinner.

Australian captain Pat Cummins had indicated before the match that the selectors were still assessing whether to play four fast bowlers or include a spinner.

Australia have ultimately chosen the more familiar combination of three frontline fast bowlers and Lyon.

Marnus Labuschagne Keeps His Place

There is also no change for Marnus Labuschagne, despite his extended struggles with the bat.

Labuschagne will continue at No. 3, while Steve Smith, Cameron Green and Alex Carey remain key parts of Australia's batting line-up.

After losing the opening Test in Darwin, Australia face a must-win situation in Mackay. Bangladesh, meanwhile, have the opportunity to secure a historic Test series victory over Australia.

Australia will need a significant improvement in Mackay as they attempt to bounce back from their opening-Test defeat and prevent Bangladesh from sealing the two-match series.
