Mohanlal’s Mother Santhakumari Dies at 90 in Kochi After Prolonged Illness

Santhakumari, the mother of veteran Malayalam actor Mohanlal, died on Tuesday at the age of 90 at her residence in Elamakkara, Kochi. Family sources said she had been battling age-related health issues for some time and was under medical care at home.

She had been living with Mohanlal, who personally oversaw her care during her prolonged illness. Despite his demanding professional commitments, the actor was known to spend time with his mother and remained closely involved in her wellbeing.

Santhakumari’s health reportedly declined gradually due to age-related complications, requiring continuous medical attention. Funeral arrangements are expected to be held in Kochi, with close family members in attendance. Further details regarding the last rites are awaited.

Mohanlal’s father, Viswanathan Nair, passed away in 2005, while his elder brother Pyarilal died in 2000. Over the years, Santhakumari remained largely away from the public eye, maintaining a private life even as her son rose to national and international prominence.

The actor has often spoken about his mother’s influence on his life and career, acknowledging her role in shaping his values and resilience. He has previously described it as a privilege to share his achievements with her and had mentioned that one of his most emotional moments was being able to share his Dadasaheb Phalke Award with his mother.

Though she stayed away from public appearances, Santhakumari’s presence was frequently felt through Mohanlal’s reflections on her guidance, strength and support. Her passing marks a deeply personal loss for the actor and his family.
