Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 Auction Plan: Budget Strategy and Five Players MI Could Target

Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2026 Auction Plan: Budget Strategy and Five Players MI Could Target

Mumbai Indians (MI) will enter the IPL 2026 mini-auction with the smallest purse among all franchises — just ₹2.75 crore. Despite releasing nine players, the five-time champions have retained their core and require only a few strategic additions.

Notable exits include Reece Topley, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Lizaad Williams and promising left-arm seamer Vignesh Puthur, who picked up six wickets in five outings last season but was still released as MI recalibrated its squad.

MI’s retained group remains among the strongest in the league. With Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Trent Boult, the franchise enters the auction with stability and clarity. Overseas match-winners like Ryan Rickelton, Will Jacks, Corbin Bosch and Mitchell Santner further reinforce their depth.

Strategic Approach: Targeted, Role-Specific Buys

Owning just five open slots, including one overseas position, MI are expected to remain conservative. The goal is not a rebuild, but filling specific tactical gaps:

  • A budget-friendly Indian pacer

  • A reliable domestic spinner

  • A finishing-order power-hitter

  • A backup wicketkeeper

  • A versatile uncapped batter

MI have traditionally excelled at identifying undervalued domestic talent, and this auction should be no different. With trades bringing in Sherfane Rutherford, Shardul Thakur and Mayank Markande, their bench is now more balanced.

Five Players MI Can Target in the 2026 Auction

1. KM Asif – Indian Pacer

Currently the highest wicket-taker in SMAT 2025–26 with 15 wickets in six innings, Asif is sharp at the death and offers high-value bowling at a modest price. His 55 wickets in 42 T20 innings make him a strong budget pick for MI.

2. David Miller – Overseas Finisher

Miller’s vast IPL experience and finishing ability make him appealing for Wankhede’s batting-friendly track. However, with a base price of ₹2 crore, MI will need luck to secure him affordably.

3. Akash Madhwal – Former MI Sensation

Known for the best-ever IPL playoff bowling figures, Madhwal fits MI’s culture well. Despite a quiet last two seasons, his return would strengthen MI’s Indian pace stocks.

4. Anmolpreet Singh – In-Form Domestic Batter

With 241 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 172.14 in SMAT 2025–26, Anmolpreet brings explosive middle-order hitting. His form makes him a standout domestic batting option.

5. Mukul Choudhary – Young Wicketkeeper-Batter

The Rajasthan keeper has shown promise with a strike rate above 160. With MI needing affordable wicketkeeping depth, Mukul is a strong contender.

Bonus Target: Tejasvi Singh

One of DPL 2025’s breakout performers, Tejasvi smashed 339 runs at a strike rate of 190+. His hitting ability makes him a compelling choice for MI’s lower order.

MI’s Auction Outlook

Given their purse limitations, MI will avoid bidding wars and pursue value picks over marquee buys. They are likely to stay quiet until late in the auction when hidden gems become available.

Their disciplined strategy, built around a rock-solid core, positions them well to focus on fine-tuning rather than reconstruction as they chase another IPL title.
