Tom Cruise Teams Up With Alejandro González Iñárritu for Comedy Film Digger, Teaser Out

Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise is set to collaborate with Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu for the first time in an upcoming film titled Digger. The makers officially announced the project with the release of a first-look poster and a brief teaser, instantly generating buzz across global cinema circles. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on October 2, 2026.

Jointly produced by Warner Bros Pictures and Legendary Entertainment, Digger has been described as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions,” marking a tonal departure for both Cruise and Iñárritu. Known primarily for intense, character-driven dramas such as Birdman, The Revenant and Babel, Iñárritu stepping into dark comedy territory has sparked curiosity among critics and fans alike.

Digger was shot over a six-month schedule in the United Kingdom and marks Iñárritu’s return to English-language cinema after nearly a decade. His last English-language project, The Revenant (2015), earned him an Academy Award for Best Director and cemented his reputation as one of contemporary cinema’s most influential voices.

Iñárritu not only directs but also produces the film and co-writes the screenplay alongside long-time collaborators Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, and Sabina Berman. Tom Cruise also serves as a producer, further strengthening his creative involvement in the project.

While plot details remain tightly under wraps, Warner Bros has released a cryptic logline. Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, described as “the most powerful man in the world” who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s saviour—before the disaster he has unleashed destroys everything. The synopsis hints at a sharp blend of satire, spectacle and existential stakes.

The film boasts a strong ensemble cast, including Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde, and Emma D’Arcy. The diverse line-up adds to the film’s prestige appeal and suggests a layered narrative approach.

Digger also marks Cruise’s first major collaboration with Warner Bros Discovery since he signed a strategic development and production deal with the studio earlier this year. His last appearance with Warner Bros was the 2014 sci-fi hit Edge of Tomorrow. Since then, Cruise has largely worked with Paramount, delivering global blockbusters such as Top Gun: Maverick and the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Iñárritu’s recent film Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths premiered at the Venice Film Festival and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography. With Digger, the director appears poised to balance auteur sensibilities with mainstream appeal.

The collaboration between one of Hollywood’s biggest stars and one of cinema’s most respected filmmakers positions Digger as one of the most anticipated films of 2026.
