What was meant to be an unforgettable night of music and memories turned chaotic for hundreds of fans when over 80 mobile phones worth ₹24 lakh were stolen during Enrique Iglesias’s debut live concert in Mumbai. The theft occurred at the MMRDA Grounds in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), which was packed with around 25,000 concertgoers, including several Bollywood celebrities.
According to Mumbai Police, multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered at the BKC police station against unidentified individuals. “We are analysing CCTV footage from the venue and working with telecom operators to trace the stolen phones,” said a senior officer involved in the investigation.
The grand concert, held on Friday night, saw thousands of fans singing along to Iglesias’s iconic hits. Amid the excitement, however, thieves allegedly took advantage of the dense crowd, dim lighting, and loud atmosphere to pickpocket phones. The thefts went largely unnoticed until attendees began leaving the venue and realized their devices were missing.
Police sources confirmed that seven separate FIRs have been lodged so far and additional complaints continue to pour in. Investigators believe a coordinated gang may have operated inside the venue, targeting people in high-density crowd zones near the stage and exits.
Despite the security lapse, the event was one of Mumbai’s most anticipated live shows of the year. The concert featured the 50-year-old Grammy-winning artist Enrique Iglesias, who performed for nearly 90 minutes, delivering chart-topping hits like Hero, Bailamos, Tonight, Subeme La Radio, and Be With You.
As Iglesias stepped onto the stage dressed in his signature black outfit and cap, he greeted the ecstatic audience with a heartfelt, “Namaste, Mumbai! Raise your hands!” His energetic performance and emotional ballads captivated the audience throughout the night.
The crowd also included popular Bollywood personalities such as Vidya Balan, Malaika Arora, Rakul Preet Singh, Jackky Bhagnani, Rubina Dilaik, Abhinav Shukla, Meiyang Chang, and Rahul Vaidya, who were seen enjoying the music before reports of theft began to circulate.
Following the incident, Mumbai Police have launched a comprehensive investigation. Officials are reviewing CCTV footage, tracking IMEI numbers, and coordinating with mobile network providers to locate stolen devices. Security personnel and event organizers are also being questioned to determine if there were lapses in crowd management or entry checks.
Authorities have urged concertgoers to file complaints if their phones were stolen, assuring swift recovery efforts through digital tracking and surveillance coordination.
The large-scale theft at a high-profile international concert has raised serious concerns about security arrangements at mega-events in India. Event management experts believe such incidents underline the urgent need for enhanced crowd surveillance, digital monitoring, and security patrolling during large-scale performances.
While Enrique Iglesias’s first Mumbai performance delighted thousands, the thefts left a bitter aftertaste for many attendees. As investigations continue, Mumbai Police aim to ensure justice for victims and prevent such crimes from overshadowing the city’s vibrant live music culture.
