Indian Degrees Gain Global Value as Study Abroad Options Tighten

For decades, a foreign degree was seen as the surest path to global prestige and higher pay for Indian students. But as countries like the US, Australia, and Canada tighten international student policies, that equation is shifting — and India suddenly finds itself with an opportunity to redefine the value of its own higher education system.

Global Policy Shifts Reshaping Student Mobility

In 2025, Australia capped new international student commencements at 270,000, aiming to rebalance campuses and ease housing pressures. Canada, too, reduced its study-permit allocations to 437,000, citing the need to manage temporary resident numbers.

These restrictions, designed for domestic priorities, have narrowed options for Indian students and created uncertainty over visas, work rights, and career pathways.

According to Dr Priestly Shan, Vice Chancellor of Alliance University, such changes may prompt both employers and families to reassess “the value of foreign degrees versus Indian qualifications.”

India’s Moment: Scale Meets Rising Quality

India’s higher education ecosystem has expanded dramatically, enrolling 4.33 crore students according to AISHE 2021–22. Beyond size, there are encouraging signs of progress in quality.

In the THE World University Rankings 2026, 128 Indian institutions earned places — a huge leap from just 19 in 2016 — making India the second-highest represented country globally.

“This reflects tangible institutional progress,” said Nishtha Shukla Anand, Trustee and Director at Shoolini University, adding that private institutions are now delivering “high-quality education and world-class infrastructure at a fraction of the cost.”

What Employers Want: Outcomes Over Origins

While prestige still carries weight, employers are outcome-driven. Hiring managers increasingly prioritize skills, internships, and problem-solving over foreign credentials.

“Only institutions with global accreditations, industry linkages, and research excellence will stand out,” said Dr Jones Mathew, Principal of Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon.

He emphasized that reforms like industry immersion for faculty, new-age pedagogy, and outcome-based learning can make Indian degrees globally competitive.

The Student Strategy: Smart Choices Over Brand Names

For students and families, the new reality demands strategic thinking:

  • Choose programmes with strong placement records and industry relevance.

  • Consider twinning degrees or exchange semesters for affordable global exposure.

  • Focus on in-demand fields such as data science, healthcare, engineering, and fintech.

  • Plan early and diversify beyond traditional destinations like the US and UK.

Building Long-Term Value for Indian Degrees

To sustain momentum, policymakers must strengthen research funding, faculty incentives, and international partnerships while maintaining transparency in placement data.

If Indian universities continue to improve learning outcomes and employability, the long-standing bias toward foreign degrees could erode — turning Indian education from a fallback option into a first choice for global-quality learning.

In an increasingly protectionist world, India’s best opportunity may lie not in sending students abroad, but in creating global campuses at home.
