Phil Simmons Urges Bangladesh Cricketers to Avoid Social Media After Airport Attack

Bangladesh coach Phil Simmons has strongly urged national cricketers to stay off social media following an abusive reception at Dhaka airport after their 3-0 ODI series loss to Afghanistan. Players faced booing and harassment from fans, with pacer Taskin Ahmed and his family among those targeted.

Simmons stressed that while players have the personal right to use social media, as international representatives, they should avoid posting or responding online. “It is your right as a person to be on social media… But as an international player, my players should not be on there,” Simmons said ahead of Bangladesh’s ODI series against the West Indies, starting October 18 at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Condemnation of Racial Abuse

Simmons also condemned racial abuse directed at Jaker Ali Anik, who has been criticized online for poor performances during the Asia Cup and T20I series against Afghanistan. He called the attacks “disgusting” and emphasized that racial tones should have no place in discussions about players.

Batter Mohammad Naim Sheikh echoed the sentiment, highlighting that players represent the national flag, not themselves, and should maintain dignity despite criticism.

After the defeat to Afghanistan, Bangladesh looks to bounce back under ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who has had a challenging start with nine losses in his first ten matches since taking over from Najmul Hossain Shanto. Simmons’ advice on social media aims to protect players from unnecessary stress and maintain focus on performance.
