Rashid Khan Responds to ‘Second-Best in Asia’ Tag After Asia Cup 2025 Exit

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan has dismissed the media-coined “Asia’s second-best team” label, stressing that neither he nor his squad ever claimed the title. His comments came ahead of the T20I series against Bangladesh, following Afghanistan’s group-stage exit at the Asia Cup 2025.

Clarifying the Tag

Speaking to reporters, Rashid said:
"There is one thing which is always going around the media, people saying, best second Asia team. We didn't say that. If you look at our past performances, that’s where the tag came from — beating big teams in Asia Cup, World Cup semis, and Champions Trophy. But we haven’t given ourselves that tag."

He emphasised that the squad focuses on performing well rather than chasing labels, adding that occasional losses are part of the game.

Frustration Over Criticism

Rashid voiced disappointment at the mockery Afghanistan faced post-elimination:
"They bring something into the table where people discuss it and make fun of it. I feel like nowadays, the more you make fun of someone, the more people like you. It doesn’t look nice."

He also highlighted the team’s lack of recent T20I matches, saying, "We haven’t played much T20Is as a team… it does take time to gather as a team. But it is good for us."

Focus on World Cup Preparation

Looking forward, Rashid reiterated that Afghanistan’s primary objective is World Cup preparation, not just immediate results:
"Every game is competitive. Our target is to be a perfect and balanced side for the next World Cup. Losing now doesn’t matter as much, but not performing in the World Cup would be more upsetting."

Afghanistan now shifts its focus to building a well-prepared squad for upcoming global tournaments, using the Asia Cup as a learning experience.
