New Zealand's ODI squad has suffered a significant setback ahead of its five-match series against India, with senior batters Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra ruled out after failing to recover from their respective injuries.
New Zealand Cricket confirmed on Monday that Chapman needs additional rehabilitation for a hamstring injury, while Ravindra requires more time to recover from a shoulder problem. The series begins on Wednesday, leaving the team with two important gaps in its batting line-up.
Chapman's latest MRI scan showed that his left hamstring requires another two weeks of rehabilitation before he can return to the field. Ravindra's right shoulder has also not recovered sufficiently for him to field at full capacity.
The team management said it would avoid taking unnecessary risks with either player.
Tim Seifert, Henry Nicholls and Dean Foxcroft Added
New Zealand selectors have made changes to cover the absences. Tim Seifert, initially selected only for the fourth and fifth ODIs, has now been included for the entire series.
Henry Nicholls will join the squad for the first three matches, while Dean Foxcroft has been added for the final two games.
There is also uncertainty surrounding fast bowler Matt Henry, who is expected to join the squad on Monday. The team management will assess his fitness and match readiness after his arrival.
Matt Fisher, originally selected for the fourth and fifth ODIs, will remain with the squad throughout the series as an additional bowling option.
Rob Walter Explains Injury Concerns
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter described the absence of Chapman and Ravindra as disappointing but said the team would not compromise their recovery.
Walter said Chapman was working hard to return, while Ravindra's shoulder had not recovered enough to handle the demands of white-ball cricket comfortably.
He also highlighted the importance of protecting Ravindra's fitness ahead of the upcoming Test series later this month.
The coach welcomed the replacements, noting that Nicholls was familiar with the team setup and Foxcroft had recently featured in the ODI series against the West Indies.
New Zealand Face Batting Combination Challenge
The absence of two experienced players means New Zealand will have to reassess its batting combinations before the opening ODI against India.
With Seifert available throughout the series and Nicholls and Foxcroft joining for specific matches, the team will look to adjust its lineup while monitoring the fitness of its remaining players.
