New Delhi, November 10 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow and condolences over the tragic loss of lives in the Red Fort car blast, which shook the heart of India’s capital on Monday evening. The explosion, which occurred near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, killed 10 people and left 24 others injured, prompting the Centre to place Delhi and adjoining states on high alert.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi said he had reviewed the situation with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Delhi Police, and the National Security Guard (NSG).
“Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the blast in Delhi earlier this evening. May the injured recover at the earliest. Those affected are being assisted by authorities. Reviewed the situation with Home Minister Amit Shah Ji and other officials,” the Prime Minister posted.
Officials confirmed that rescue operations and forensic assessments continued through the night, with multiple agencies working in coordination to identify the nature of the explosion.
The explosion occurred around 6:52 pm, when a Hyundai i20 car, reportedly with a Haryana number plate, came to a halt at a traffic signal near the Red Fort Metro Station. Witnesses said a sudden flash of fire and a deafening sound filled the area, sending pedestrians and commuters running for safety.
Within minutes, the vehicle was engulfed in flames. Several nearby vehicles and street vendors’ stalls were damaged in the blast’s impact. Fire tenders, ambulances, and police teams rushed to the scene as bystanders attempted to rescue the injured.
All the injured were transported to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital, where emergency medical teams worked late into the night. According to hospital officials, at least five victims remain in critical condition.
Prime Minister Modi was briefed about the developments by Home Minister Amit Shah, who immediately convened a high-level security meeting at North Block. Senior officials from the NIA, NSG, and Intelligence Bureau (IB) joined the meeting via video conference.
Amit Shah assured the public that “no possibility will be ignored” and that the investigation will cover “every angle, from technical malfunction to terror links.”
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally taken over the case. Forensic teams collected metal fragments, fuel tank debris, and chemical samples from the blast site, which will be analysed for traces of ammonium nitrate or RDX.
A senior NIA official confirmed that the preliminary analysis indicates the presence of explosive compounds, though further confirmation will require lab testing.
Following the blast, security has been tightened across Delhi, with CISF and Delhi Police deploying additional personnel at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), Metro stations, and railway terminals. Dog squads, surveillance drones, and baggage scanners have been activated at sensitive locations.
Mumbai, Kolkata, and Lucknow have also raised their alert levels as a precaution. The Home Ministry has directed all state police forces to maintain “maximum readiness” for the next 72 hours.
A senior Delhi Police officer told All India Story, “We are not ruling out any connection between this explosion and the 300 kg of explosives recently seized from a warehouse near Bahadurgarh. The timing of the incidents raises serious concerns.”
Political leaders and citizens across the country have expressed solidarity with the victims. President Droupadi Murmu, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, and several state leaders extended condolences.
Security analysts called the explosion a “wake-up call” for urban intelligence systems. Retired IPS officer Prakash Singh remarked, “The Red Fort has been a symbolic target in the past. Every attack here challenges not just security, but India’s sense of national pride.”
As Delhi reels from one of its deadliest explosions in recent years, the Centre’s priority remains clear: uncover the cause, bring those responsible to justice, and reassure a city that has weathered terror before.
