Taipei Knife Attack Kills 3, Injures Several; Attacker Dies After Police Chase
At least three people were killed and several others injured in a deadly knife attack in Taipei on Friday, triggering panic in public areas before the assailant died following a police pursuit, authorities said.
According to initial reports, the attacker — described as a known offender with a prior criminal record — carried out the assault at multiple locations, including a busy train station and a commercial business district. The assailant allegedly used smoke grenades to create chaos before launching knife attacks on civilians in full public view.
Eyewitnesses reported scenes of confusion and fear as people attempted to flee the area amid heavy smoke and screams. Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, while police launched an extensive manhunt.
The suspect attempted to escape after the attack but was pursued by law enforcement. Officials said the chase ended when the attacker jumped off a bridge into the water near a pier, resulting in his death. Police later confirmed that the suspect did not survive the fall.
