Indonesia Earthquake 7.6 Magnitude: 1 Dead, Tsunami Waves Trigger Panic

A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia on April 2, triggering panic and a temporary tsunami alert across coastal regions.

The quake occurred in the Northern Molucca Sea at around 7:48 am local time, with tremors felt across nearby islands.

Epicentre Near Ternate, Shallow Depth Raises Impact

According to US Geological Survey, the earthquake’s epicentre was located approximately 127 kilometres northwest of Ternate.

The tremor struck at a shallow depth of around 35 kilometres, increasing its intensity and impact on the surface.

One Dead, Panic Across Region

Authorities confirmed that one person lost their life following the earthquake. Residents rushed out of homes and buildings as strong tremors shook the region.

Panic spread quickly, especially in coastal areas vulnerable to aftershocks and rising sea levels.

Tsunami Warning Issued and Later Lifted

Following the quake, authorities issued a tsunami warning, as waves were detected in some coastal regions. Emergency alerts were activated to warn residents and ensure evacuation readiness.

The warning was later lifted after assessing that the threat had reduced, but officials continue to monitor the situation closely.

Indonesia’s High Seismic Risk

Indonesia lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. Frequent seismic activity is common due to tectonic plate movements.

Such high-magnitude earthquakes often carry risks of tsunamis and infrastructure damage.

Rescue and Monitoring Efforts Ongoing

Local authorities and disaster response teams are currently assessing damage and ensuring public safety. Monitoring for aftershocks continues as a precautionary measure.

More updates are expected as officials gather detailed information from affected areas.

Developing Situation

The situation remains dynamic, with authorities continuing to evaluate the full extent of the impact. Further updates on casualties, damage, and relief efforts are awaited.
