Filmmaker Ashwath Marimuthu has revealed that he was once close to directing Rajinikanth’s much-anticipated project Thalaivar 173, before the film eventually moved to another director.
The revelation has sparked interest among fans, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into how major film projects evolve in the industry.
Ashwath shared that he spent nearly a month developing a story specifically for Rajinikanth. The script was narrated to the superstar, who reportedly appreciated the concept—particularly the portrayal of the villain.
According to the director, Rajinikanth was deeply engaged during the narration, even skipping lunch while discussing the story and potential casting ideas.
Despite positive feedback, the collaboration did not move forward. While the exact reasons remain unclear, the project eventually shifted direction and is now set to be helmed by Cibi Chakravarthy.
The film is being produced by Kamal Haasan under his production banner, indicating the scale and expectations attached to the project.
During this period, Ashwath was also working on another film featuring Silambarasan TR, tentatively titled STR 51. He revealed that he experienced writer’s block while working on this project, which led him to temporarily shift focus to the Rajinikanth script.
This creative switch helped him regain momentum before returning to his original project.
Ashwath expressed optimism that the story he developed for Rajinikanth could still be made in the future. While it did not materialise as Thalaivar 173, the concept remains close to completion and may find its way to the screen later.
The director is now preparing to begin production on STR 51, described as a fantasy romantic comedy. The film’s official title has not yet been revealed, though it is expected to start with the letter “I”.
Further details about the cast and storyline are still under wraps, adding to the anticipation around the project.
Ashwath Marimuthu’s experience highlights how dynamic and unpredictable film development can be. Even promising collaborations can change direction due to creative, scheduling, or production-related factors.
Such insights offer a rare look into the complex process behind big-budget films and star-led projects.
