The The Social Reckoning film gave actor Jeremy Strong the challenge of portraying Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg during a period of intense scrutiny over Facebook’s influence and business decisions. To prepare, Strong spent years studying Zuckerberg’s public record, including interviews, speeches, public appearances and congressional hearings, aiming to build a portrayal grounded in the tech entrepreneur’s own words and actions.

In a statement to India Today, Strong said he felt a deep responsibility when portraying real people and undertook extensive research. He compiled material documenting Zuckerberg’s evolution between 2010 and 2020, drawing on a wide range of public sources.

Directed by Aaron Sorkin, The Social Reckoning revisits controversies surrounding Facebook and its impact on public discourse. The film draws on events connected to The Facebook Files, an investigative series published by The Wall Street Journal in 2021.

Jeremy Strong’s Research Into Mark Zuckerberg

Strong’s preparation included magazine profiles, interviews, conference appearances, public posts and written material. He specifically cited profiles published by The New Yorker, interviews conducted by Kara Swisher and Ezra Klein, Facebook F8 conferences, company town halls and Zuckerberg’s 2019 speech at Georgetown University.

He also studied all eight congressional hearings referenced in his research and read books about Zuckerberg and the technology industry.

Strong explained that his objective was to develop sufficient understanding of the subject to portray him with accuracy and credibility. Rather than relying solely on public perceptions of Zuckerberg, the actor sought to understand how the Facebook founder’s thinking and leadership evolved during a decade of significant changes for the company.

Understanding Facebook’s Biggest Controversies

A central part of Strong’s preparation involved examining the circumstances surrounding Zuckerberg during Facebook’s period of mounting criticism. The 2016 US election interference controversy and the Cambridge Analytica scandal raised questions about the platform’s handling of user data and its wider responsibilities.

Strong described Zuckerberg as a leader facing multiple crises, with investigations and scrutiny involving agencies including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Department of Justice, the FBI and the Federal Trade Commission.

The actor said his approach was to understand the character’s immediate circumstances, the principles guiding his decisions and the dilemmas created by running a company with consequences extending far beyond its business interests.

He also considered the tension between Facebook’s mission of connecting people and giving them a voice and the intended and unintended consequences of that influence at scale.

Why Jeremy Strong Reunited With Aaron Sorkin

The Social Reckoning marks Strong’s third film collaboration with Sorkin. The actor described their creative relationship as one built on trust and said working with the filmmaker was a major reason he wanted to take on the project.

Strong praised Sorkin’s writing and explained that its precision helped him approach the role with clarity. He described the collaboration as a privilege and said the filmmaker’s work inspired him to meet the demands of the material.

The film brings together Strong’s research-driven approach to characterisation and Sorkin’s focus on the dramatic circumstances surrounding Facebook’s controversies.

The Social Reckoning Release Date

The Social Reckoning was released in Indian cinemas on October 9, 2026. Strong’s preparation, as he described it, centred on understanding Zuckerberg’s public record, the pressures surrounding Facebook and the complex decisions facing its leadership during a period of intense scrutiny.
