Meta Launches Muse AI Agent to Book Trips, Send Emails and Shop Online

Meta has launched Muse, a new artificial intelligence agent designed to perform everyday digital tasks such as sending emails, booking travel, managing schedules and shopping online.

Unlike traditional AI chatbots that primarily respond to user queries, Muse has been designed to take action on behalf of users and continue working on assigned tasks with limited intervention.

The AI assistant is initially being rolled out to adult users in the United States through a dedicated application and Meta's WhatsApp platform.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg described Muse as a personal AI agent capable of understanding users' goals and working continuously to complete tasks. The company said the technology represents a major step towards more advanced AI systems that can actively assist users in both routine and long-term activities.

Muse can interact with connected digital services, including email platforms, calendars, payment services, shopping applications and smart-home systems. The AI agent can continue working in the background after receiving instructions from the user.

Meta said users will have control over the applications and services that Muse can access. Permissions can also be withdrawn at any time.

The company has placed a strong focus on privacy and security as the AI agent requires access to personal accounts and digital services. Meta said user data and credentials are stored within an isolated virtual machine designed to separate sensitive information from other systems.

Users will also have an option to prevent their conversations from being used to train Meta's AI models. The company plans to introduce an encrypted version of the service later this year.

Meta has launched a free version of Muse along with paid subscription options for users who require greater access and heavier usage. The company also plans to integrate the AI assistant with its smart glasses platform in the future.

The launch comes as technology companies increasingly compete to develop AI agents capable of performing real-world digital tasks independently. Meta is seeking to expand beyond conventional AI chatbots and develop assistants that can actively manage activities across multiple digital platforms.

The company has also introduced safety measures to reduce the risk of unintended actions. Certain sensitive activities may be reviewed by monitoring systems or require approval from users before they are completed.

Meta's launch of Muse highlights the growing shift towards agentic AI, where artificial intelligence systems are designed not only to provide information but also to take action and complete tasks for users.

The new AI agent could eventually change how people interact with digital services by allowing users to delegate everyday activities such as travel bookings, email management, online shopping and schedule planning to artificial intelligence.
