Two Minors Burned Alive in West Bengal After Haystack Fire in Purulia

Two minor children lost their lives in a tragic fire incident in West Bengal’s Purulia district on Saturday after a haystack caught fire while they were playing nearby, police officials said.

According to initial information, the fire broke out suddenly in a haystack dumped behind a residential house. The two children, both belonging to the tribal community, were reportedly playing close to the haystack when the flames spread rapidly, leaving them trapped and resulting in fatal burn injuries.

A woman from a neighbouring house was the first to notice the blaze and immediately alerted local residents. Villagers rushed to the spot and managed to bring the fire under control. During the operation, they discovered the charred bodies of the two children buried beneath the haystack.

Police were informed shortly thereafter and reached the scene to initiate formal proceedings. The victims were identified as Saleman Hembram, aged around three-and-a-half years, and Akash Besra, aged three years. The bodies were taken to a nearby health centre, where doctors confirmed their deaths, and were later sent to Purulia Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Authorities have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Officials said the exact reason behind the blaze is yet to be ascertained and will be established after further inquiry.

Local residents expressed shock over the incident, recalling how efforts were made to extinguish the flames as soon as the fire was spotted. The tragedy has cast a pall of grief over the village.
