Political tensions in Mumbai have intensified following sharp remarks by Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, who took a direct swipe at Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde amid the unfolding drama after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Thackeray warned that if leaders from the Shiv Sena faction led by Shinde could split once, they could do so again, signalling continued instability within the ruling camp.
Thackeray’s remarks came in response to reports that 29 newly elected corporators aligned with the Shinde faction were moved to a luxury hotel in Bandra. The decision has triggered intense political speculation, with opposition parties alleging attempts at consolidation and protection amid fears of defection and poaching ahead of the crucial mayoral race in Mumbai.
The relocation of corporators to a hotel in Bandra has become a major talking point in Maharashtra’s political circles. While leaders from the ruling alliance have maintained that the move was meant to ensure coordination and security, opposition leaders have portrayed it as a sign of nervousness within the Shinde-led camp.
Uddhav Thackeray used the opportunity to remind voters and party workers of the dramatic split within the Shiv Sena in 2022, which led to the formation of the Shinde government. He suggested that internal dissent could resurface, especially under the pressure of negotiations and power-sharing talks following the BMC results.
The BMC elections have produced a fragmented mandate, with the Bharatiya Janata Party emerging as the single largest party. However, it is the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction that holds a pivotal position in determining the next mayor and shaping the civic body’s leadership.
This delicate balance has heightened tensions within the ruling alliance, as negotiations continue behind closed doors. Political observers note that the outcome of these talks could redefine power equations in Mumbai’s civic governance, making the loyalty of corporators a central concern.
The Shiv Sena (UBT) and other opposition parties are closely watching developments, hoping to capitalise on any friction between the BJP and the Shinde faction. Thackeray’s remarks are being seen as a calculated attempt to sow doubt within the ruling alliance while reinforcing his narrative of betrayal and instability.
Analysts believe that the mayoral contest will be fiercely fought, with control over the BMC carrying significant political and financial influence. The civic body plays a crucial role in urban infrastructure, development projects, and governance in India’s financial capital.
As negotiations intensify, Maharashtra’s political landscape remains volatile. The movement of corporators, sharp public statements, and behind-the-scenes manoeuvring underline the high stakes involved in the BMC power struggle. With alliances being tested and loyalties scrutinised, the coming days are expected to witness further political fireworks in Mumbai.
The unfolding situation not only reflects the ongoing rivalry between Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde but also highlights the broader contest for dominance in Maharashtra politics, where civic elections have once again become a battleground for state-level power.
