India has intensified diplomatic engagement with Iran to secure consular access and legal assistance for 16 Indian sailors who have been detained for over a month following the seizure of their vessel, MT Valiant Roar. The Indian Embassy in Tehran said efforts are ongoing to ensure the welfare of the crew and to push for an early resolution as the case enters Iran’s judicial process.
According to official statements, the Indian mission has repeatedly raised the matter with Iranian authorities at multiple levels. The Consulate of India in Bandar Abbas first sought immediate consular access on December 14, days after the vessel was seized. Since then, the request has been reiterated through diplomatic correspondence and in-person meetings, including engagements at the ambassadorial level in both Tehran and Bandar Abbas.
The 16-member crew has remained in detention since December 2025, prompting New Delhi to press Tehran to allow regular communication between the sailors and their families in India. Indian officials have also sought assurances regarding the physical safety, medical needs, and legal representation of the detained crew members as judicial proceedings move forward.
The Indian Embassy has been coordinating closely with the UAE-based company that owns the vessel and with Iran-based shipping agents to ensure that the crew receives regular supplies of food, water, and fuel. After reports emerged of dwindling provisions onboard, the Indian mission intervened in early January to facilitate emergency supplies, which were delivered with assistance from the Iranian navy.
Officials said arrangements are also being pursued to secure legal counsel for the sailors so that their interests are adequately represented under Iranian law. The embassy has emphasised that consular access remains a priority, particularly given the prolonged detention and the lack of clarity surrounding the legal process.
The MT Valiant Roar was intercepted on December 8, 2025, by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in international waters near Dibba Port, off the UAE coast. The vessel was subsequently taken to Bandar-e-Jask.
Iranian authorities have accused the ship of fuel smuggling, a charge that the crew members and vessel operators have strongly disputed. Family members and seafarer representatives have described the interception as sudden and aggressive, alleging that the tanker was chased and fired upon, resulting in damage to the vessel and injuries to some crew members before it was escorted to port.
Among those detained is Third Engineer Ketan Mehta. His father, Mukesh Mehta, has appealed to Narendra Modi, the Ministry of External Affairs, and the Directorate General of Shipping to step up diplomatic efforts to secure the release of his son and the other crew members.
Families of the sailors have expressed deep concern over limited communication, restricted movement, and what they describe as harsh conditions since the interception. Many have said weeks passed without clear information on the legal grounds for the seizure or the status of the detained crew, adding to their anxiety.
As diplomatic efforts continue, India has reiterated that the safety, rights, and early release of its citizens remain a top priority, while urging Iranian authorities to ensure transparency and due process in handling the case.
