US, Allies Block Pakistan-China Bid to Sanction Balochistan Liberation Army at UN

The United States, United Kingdom, and France have blocked a joint Pakistan-China effort to sanction the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its suicide wing, the Majeed Brigade, at the United Nations. The move comes over a month after the US designated both groups as Foreign Terrorist Organisations.

The bid sought to list the BLA and Majeed Brigade under the UN 1267 regime, which enforces sanctions—including travel bans, asset freezes, and arms embargoes—on entities linked to Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and ISIL. However, the US and its allies argued there was insufficient evidence connecting these groups to Al Qaeda or ISIL.

Pakistan and China had highlighted that the BLA and other terror groups, such as ISIL-K, Al-Qaeda, and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, were operating from Afghanistan and conducting cross-border attacks. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, urged the Taliban-led Afghan government to fulfill international counter-terrorism commitments.

“Pakistan and China have jointly submitted to the 1267 Sanctions Committee a request to designate the BLA and Majeed Brigade. We hope the Council will act swiftly on this listing to curb their terrorist activities,” Ahmed said.

The BLA and its Majeed Brigade have been under US scrutiny for years. The US first designated the BLA as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity in 2019, following a series of attacks. Since then, the group has claimed responsibility for multiple incidents, including suicide bombings and high-profile assaults carried out by the Majeed Brigade.
