The United States government shutdown has triggered one of the worst air travel crises in American history, grounding flights, delaying thousands more, and leaving millions of passengers stranded across major airports.
With the shutdown now surpassing the previous 35-day record, it officially marks the longest government shutdown in US history, severely disrupting the country’s aviation network and travel economy.
As essential federal employees — including air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers — continue to work without pay, absenteeism has soared.
Many airports across New York, Dallas, Atlanta, Denver, and Los Angeles have reported flight cancellations, long security lines, and delays exceeding several hours.
Aviation analysts estimate that more than 4.5 million passengers have been affected nationwide since the shutdown began, with cascading delays also disrupting international connections.
“The US government shutdown will today surpass the previous record of 35 days, and it is going to be the longest shutdown in American history,” said Pranav Padhye, correspondent for India Today.
Industry experts warn that the ongoing crisis could cost the US travel economy billions of dollars.
Airlines are struggling to maintain schedules amid staff shortages, and business travel has taken a major hit.
Aviation consultant Paul Hudson from FlyersRights.org stated that “every day of disruption costs airlines roughly $200 million in operational losses, not counting the downstream effects on tourism and logistics.”
The Airlines for America (A4A) group has urged the federal government to restore funding immediately, warning that continued delays could have “long-term reputational damage” to the US aviation system.
The disruption has also affected international air routes, with connecting flights from Europe and Asia delayed due to backlog congestion at US entry points.
Global carriers including British Airways, Lufthansa, and Air India have issued advisories urging passengers to check flight status in advance.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has meanwhile acknowledged that several air traffic control centres are running below minimum staffing levels, forcing rerouting and limited flight clearances to maintain safety.
The shutdown began after Congress and the White House failed to agree on a new federal spending bill, leading to a halt in non-essential government operations.
Essential employees in critical departments, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Aviation Administration, are required by law to continue working — but without pay until the budget passes.
Negotiations remain stalled as both parties trade blame over the budget impasse.
Political analysts warn that if the stalemate continues, air travel disruptions could extend into the holiday season, impacting tourism and economic growth nationwide.
The previous record-setting shutdown in 2018–2019 lasted 35 days and caused similar aviation chaos, with flight delays across major hubs.
This year’s shutdown has now surpassed that milestone, adding a new chapter to America’s ongoing struggle with political gridlock and economic consequences.
As the shutdown continues with no immediate resolution in sight, passengers are advised to check with airlines, arrive early, and expect significant delays.
The unfolding crisis underscores how deeply intertwined federal operations and public infrastructure are — and how their breakdown can paralyze an entire nation’s mobility.
