Vijay Deverakonda hopes Ranabaali will revive his box-office fortunes when the film releases on October 15.

The Vijay Deverakonda comeback conversation has gained momentum ahead of Ranabaali, his upcoming historical drama with Rashmika Mandanna. Scheduled to release on October 15, the film arrives after a series of commercial disappointments and could influence how audiences respond to the actor’s future projects.

For Vijay, this is about more than delivering another hit. It is an opportunity to reconnect with viewers who once embraced his unconventional screen presence and ambitious choices.

From Arjun Reddy to Box-Office Setbacks

Vijay’s rise in Telugu cinema began with Pelli Choopulu (2016), while Arjun Reddy (2017) transformed him into one of the industry’s most talked-about young stars. His success with Geetha Govindam (2018), opposite Rashmika Mandanna, demonstrated that his appeal extended beyond intense, rebellious characters. Taxiwaala also performed successfully that year.

His popularity grew beyond films through his fashion choices, confident public appearances and the ‘Rowdy’ identity. However, reactions to his public persona became increasingly divided, with some admirers viewing his confidence as ambition and critics interpreting it as overconfidence.

Subsequent releases struggled to reproduce his early commercial success. Dear Comrade, World Famous Lover, Liger, Khushi, The Family Star and Kingdom delivered mixed or disappointing commercial outcomes. Liger, in particular, was positioned as a major pan-India launch but failed to meet expectations.

The challenge now is finding the right combination of script, character and direction rather than relying on promotional scale alone.

What Ranabaali Brings to the Screen

Directed by Rahul Sankrityan, Ranabaali is set against the Great Madras Famine of 1876–78 and explores colonial exploitation, hunger and resistance. Vijay plays the titular character, while Rashmika portrays his wife, Jayamma. Arnold Vosloo appears as antagonist Sir Theodore Hector.

The trailer promises an expansive historical setting, elaborate production design, folklore and music by Ajay-Atul. Vijay’s reunion with Sankrityan, who previously directed him in Taxiwaala, also adds interest to the project.

However, spectacle alone cannot guarantee audience engagement. The film must ensure that its historical backdrop and themes meaningfully shape the story rather than simply provide a setting for action. A compelling screenplay and convincing performances will be essential to its reception.

Can Ranabaali Restore Audience Confidence?

Rashmika’s presence adds another draw, given the popularity of her pairing with Vijay in Geetha Govindam and Dear Comrade. Yet the film’s long-term impact will depend on its overall execution and the response it receives in cinemas.

A successful release could renew confidence in Vijay’s project choices and provide fresh momentum for his career. Another disappointment could intensify questions about the gap between his star image and the commercial performance of his films.

Vijay has already demonstrated his ability to build a following through distinctive performances. With Ranabaali, the challenge is to turn that potential into a sustained run of audience-pleasing films.

The film is scheduled to release on October 15, alongside Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, setting up a notable box-office clash.
