Why Congress Is Seeing a Priyanka Gandhi vs Rahul Moment Again

After a series of electoral setbacks in Maharashtra, Haryana, and Delhi, the Congress is once again witnessing an internal debate that places Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi at the centre of political speculation.

Voices within the party have grown louder, advocating a stronger central role for Priyanka Gandhi, who has rapidly evolved from a behind-the-scenes strategist into a prominent parliamentary performer. Her visibility and impact during the recent Parliament session have reignited questions about leadership direction within the party.

The renewed debate was triggered when senior Odisha leader Mohammed Moquim wrote to Sonia Gandhi, questioning the party’s leadership approach and suggesting a larger role for Priyanka Gandhi. Moquim also flagged his inability to meet Rahul Gandhi for nearly three years despite being an elected MLA. Days later, he was removed from the party, adding fuel to the internal churn narrative.

The discussion intensified when Saharanpur MP Imran Masood publicly pitched a “Priyanka for Prime Minister” argument, drawing parallels with Indira Gandhi. His remarks, made during a media interaction, created unease within the Congress, which has consistently projected Rahul Gandhi as the principal challenger to the Modi government.

Masood later issued a clarification, asserting his loyalty to Rahul Gandhi and stating that his comments were not intended to undermine the party’s leadership. However, the BJP seized on the episode, portraying it as evidence of Congress’s internal lack of confidence in Rahul Gandhi.

Amid the political sparring, Priyanka Gandhi’s parliamentary performances have stood out. During the winter session, her speeches—particularly during the Vande Mataram debate and discussions opposing changes to the rural employment scheme—drew sustained applause and widespread attention on social media. Her delivery in fluent Hindi, measured tone, and sharp political messaging contrasted with Rahul Gandhi’s more confrontational style, which drew limited traction in the House.

Beyond speeches, Priyanka Gandhi’s growing influence was evident in her ability to engage across party lines. She secured an on-the-spot meeting with Nitin Gadkari during Question Hour to raise infrastructure concerns related to Kerala. She also attended the customary Lok Sabha Speaker’s tea party—marking the first such appearance by a Gandhi family member in two years—and was seen interacting cordially with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Despite being a first-time MP, Priyanka Gandhi is increasingly viewed within the Congress as relatable, articulate, and accessible—qualities that resonate with party workers and MPs alike. As she emerges as a key troubleshooter during a difficult phase for the party, the Congress leadership now faces the delicate task of managing growing perceptions of a “Priyanka vs Rahul” dynamic without deepening internal divisions.
