Why Egg Prices Are Crossing Rs 8 in Indian Cities This Winter

Egg prices have surged across multiple Indian cities this winter, with retail rates crossing Rs 8 per piece in markets ranging from Delhi and Mumbai to Patna and Ranchi. For many consumers, the rise is striking, as eggs have long been considered one of the most affordable sources of protein, especially during the colder months.

Compared to August and September, egg prices have climbed by nearly 25–50% in several regions. Traders say prices have already breached previous seasonal levels and could remain elevated through January before easing later in the year.

Rising Winter Demand Drives Prices

Industry experts say demand is the primary driver behind the spike. Egg consumption traditionally rises sharply from December due to colder weather and dietary preferences. Uttar Pradesh alone consumes an estimated 5.5–6 crore eggs daily, of which nearly two-thirds are sourced from other states.

Retail prices in many parts of UP are currently between Rs 8 and Rs 10 per egg, while wholesale rates have moved close to Rs 7.5 per piece. Transport costs and inter-state supply dependence are adding further pressure, with traders warning of a possible 15–20 paise increase in wholesale prices in the coming weeks.

If current trends continue, eggs selling at around Rs 8.5 per piece in January would not be unusual, market watchers say. Prices are expected to soften only from February as demand tapers off.

Farmers Say Prices Are Finally Sustainable

Poultry industry leaders argue that current rates should not be viewed as excessive. According to representatives of the Poultry Federation of India, higher prices are offering long-overdue relief to farmers who have struggled with rising feed costs for years.

Maize and soybean prices—key components of poultry feed—have steadily increased, while egg prices remained subdued for long periods. This imbalance forced many farmers to shut down operations, reducing overall production. Industry experts warn that without better realisations this year, egg shortages could have worsened in the future.

Despite the recent rise, eggs in India remain among the cheapest globally when compared with international markets.

Where Eggs Are Cheapest in Wholesale Markets

Data from the National Egg Coordination Committee shows that Namakkal in Tamil Nadu and Hospet in Karnataka continue to offer the lowest wholesale prices in the country. Eggs in these markets are currently selling at around Rs 640–645 per 100 eggs.

Namakkal remains one of India’s largest egg hubs and accounts for a significant share of domestic supply as well as exports. Stable output from these centres helps prevent even sharper price increases nationwide.

For now, consumers are likely to face higher egg prices through the rest of winter, with meaningful relief expected only as temperatures rise and seasonal demand eases in the months ahead.
