Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has weighed in on the debate over India’s opening combination for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, suggesting that Ishan Kishan may have firmly secured his place at the top of the batting order following a blistering performance in a warm-up clash against South Africa.
India experimented with combinations during the practice match at Navi Mumbai, where captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed at the toss that Kishan would open alongside Abhishek Sharma. The left-handed batter delivered an emphatic response, smashing a rapid 53 off just 20 balls, including a flurry of sixes, before retiring out to allow teammates valuable match time.
Speaking after the match, Chopra said Kishan’s performance had significantly tilted the balance in his favour in the contest for the opening slot. According to the former batter, the aggressive innings demonstrated both form and intent at a crucial stage, reinforcing the team management’s faith in Kishan ahead of the tournament.
The comments come as India continues to fine-tune its lineup, with competition intensifying between several top-order players. While Sanju Samson had earlier been viewed as a strong contender for the opening role, inconsistent returns in recent matches appear to have affected his chances.
Samson struggled during India’s recent T20I series against New Zealand, scoring modest runs across multiple outings. In contrast, Kishan entered the warm-up game riding a wave of confidence after a standout series in which he piled up runs at an exceptional strike rate, including a memorable century.
Analysts say that in T20 cricket, recent form often plays a decisive role in selection decisions, particularly when teams are searching for explosive starts in powerplay overs. Kishan’s aggressive approach and ability to take on bowlers early could align well with India’s evolving batting strategy under the current team management.
Despite Chopra’s strong assessment, he acknowledged that Samson could still play an important role during the tournament. Injuries, changes in conditions or tactical adjustments could open opportunities for him at different positions in the batting order.
With squads needing versatile players capable of adapting to multiple roles, Samson’s experience and skill set may prove valuable if India requires mid-order stability or a backup option for the top order.
India’s warm-up victory over South Africa offered several positive signs for the team’s campaign, including strong batting displays and opportunities for players returning from injury to regain rhythm. The management appears focused on building a flexible lineup capable of adapting to varied match situations throughout the tournament.
As India prepares for its opening fixtures, the debate over the ideal opening combination remains one of the most closely watched storylines. Kishan’s recent performances have certainly strengthened his case, but team selections could continue to evolve depending on conditions and opposition strategies.
With expectations high and competition for places intense, the final decision on India’s opening pair may only become clear once the tournament gets underway. For now, Chopra’s remarks have added fuel to the discussion, highlighting how a single standout performance can reshape selection dynamics on the road to a global event.
