Abhishek Sharma Fitness Doubt Ahead of India vs Pakistan Clash

India opener Abhishek Sharma has received a morale boost ahead of the high-profile T20 World Cup clash against Pakistan, with his parents arriving in Colombo to support him as uncertainty surrounds his match fitness. The development adds an emotional layer to the build-up for the February 15 encounter at the R. Premadasa Stadium, even as team management continues to monitor his recovery from a recent stomach infection.

Abhishek travelled to Colombo with the Indian squad on Friday, raising hopes that he could still be available for selection. However, the team management is prioritising his full recovery and is unlikely to take risks with his health ahead of a demanding tournament schedule.

Illness disrupted campaign start

The young opener was hospitalised in Delhi earlier in the week after suffering from a stomach infection, forcing him to miss India’s group-stage fixture against Namibia. The timing proved unfortunate, coming just as the tournament gathered momentum.

His only appearance in the competition so far came in India’s opening match against the United States, where he was dismissed for a golden duck. The setback, followed by illness, interrupted his rhythm and delayed his opportunity to make an impact in the tournament.

Although he has since been discharged from hospital, medical staff and team officials are focused on ensuring he regains full strength before returning to competitive action.

Selection call still pending

India are yet to take a final decision on Abhishek’s availability for the clash against Pakistan. Captain Suryakumar Yadav indicated earlier that the opener could miss “a game or two,” leaving the possibility of his participation uncertain.

Former cricketers and analysts have advised caution, emphasizing that the tournament extends beyond a single marquee match. With the Super 8 stage and knockout rounds ahead, team management may prefer to ensure that Abhishek returns fully fit rather than rushing him back prematurely.

Backup options provide stability

India’s batting lineup demonstrated depth in his absence. Against Namibia, Sanju Samson opened alongside Ishan Kishan, and the combination delivered a promising performance. Samson contributed a quick 22 off eight deliveries, while Kishan produced an explosive 61 off 24 balls, including a rapid half-century that set the tone for India’s dominant win.

These performances provide the team with viable alternatives should Abhishek require additional recovery time.

As anticipation builds in Colombo for one of cricket’s most anticipated rivalries, India’s focus remains on balancing player fitness with competitive readiness. Whether Abhishek Sharma returns for the Pakistan clash or is rested as a precaution, his recovery and long-term availability remain a priority as the tournament progresses.
