Actor Aamir Khan has addressed the long-standing belief that his iconic character Phunsukh Wangdu from the 2009 blockbuster 3 Idiots was based on education reformer and activist Sonam Wangchuk. Speaking at a British Film Institute (BFI) event in England, the actor dismissed the claim, calling it a misconception that has persisted for years.
Khan's clarification comes at a time when Wangchuk is in the spotlight due to his 20-day indefinite hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, where he is protesting over the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination.
Responding to questions during the event, Aamir Khan said neither director Rajkumar Hirani nor writer Abhijat Joshi knew Sonam Wangchuk while making 3 Idiots.
According to Khan, the belief that Phunsukh Wangdu was directly based on Wangchuk is incorrect, adding that Wangchuk himself has clarified this on multiple occasions.
The actor also reacted to recent comments made by Omi Vaidya, who portrayed Chatur Ramalingam in the film and had recently suggested that Phunsukh Wangdu was inspired by Wangchuk.
While clarifying the misconception, Aamir Khan shifted the focus to Wangchuk's ongoing protest, expressing concern over his health.
The actor said that everyone hopes Wangchuk ends his fast safely and that his work deserves respect regardless of any connection with 3 Idiots.
According to Khan, Wangchuk's achievements stand on their own and do not require association with a film to earn public recognition.
Sonam Wangchuk has previously maintained that while certain aspects of 3 Idiots may have been inspired by or influenced by his work, the character of Phunsukh Wangdu is not his life story.
During an earlier television appearance, Wangchuk said he does not believe the film is based on him, although he acknowledged that some elements could have drawn inspiration from his ideas.
He also stated that he would neither take pride in nor regret any perceived connection between himself and the film.
Sonam Wangchuk began his indefinite hunger strike on June 28 at Jantar Mantar.
According to reports, he is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET paper leak.
As his fast entered its 20th day, concerns over his deteriorating health have grown, with several political leaders and members of the film industry urging a resolution.
Ever since the release of 3 Idiots in 2009, fans have debated whether Phunsukh Wangdu was inspired by Sonam Wangchuk.
Aamir Khan's latest remarks seek to settle that discussion by reiterating that the character was not directly based on the activist, while emphasising that Wangchuk's contributions to education and society deserve appreciation in their own right.
No. Aamir Khan said the belief is a misconception and clarified that the character was not based on Sonam Wangchuk.
Wangchuk has said that while the film may have been inspired by aspects of his work, it is not based on his life story.
According to reports, Wangchuk is protesting over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and has demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Aamir Khan expressed concern for Wangchuk's health and said he hopes the hunger strike ends safely.
