Actor Aamir Khan has found himself at the centre of a fresh controversy after a Uttar Pradesh cleric objected to his marriage with Gauri Spratt and reportedly issued a fatwa, claiming that the interfaith union is not permissible under Sharia.
The development comes days after Aamir Khan and Gauri Spratt tied the knot in a private registered marriage ceremony on July 5, 2026. Neither the actor nor his representatives have responded publicly to the remarks.
According to reports, Shahi Chief Mufti Maulana Chaudhary Ifrahim Hussain of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta criticised Aamir Khan's marriage, stating that a Muslim man cannot marry a woman belonging to a non-Islamic faith under Sharia.
In a video circulating on social media, the cleric reportedly said such marriages are not permissible under Islamic law and described them as sinful. He also expressed strong opposition to Aamir Khan's third marriage, claiming such unions misrepresent Sharia.
The remarks have sparked widespread debate on social media, drawing mixed reactions from users.
Aamir Khan and Bengaluru-based entrepreneur Gauri Spratt were married in a private registered ceremony earlier this month.
Gauri is associated with the beauty and wellness industry and has a son from her previous marriage.
The couple has largely kept their relationship away from the public eye.
The latest controversy follows Aamir Khan's recent comments addressing allegations surrounding his interfaith marriages.
The actor had stated that his family has always respected religious diversity and clarified that none of his wives—including Reena Dutta, Kiran Rao, or Gauri Spratt—converted their religion before marriage.
Aamir also said that all three marriages were conducted as civil marriages, without any religious conversion.
Before marrying Gauri Spratt, Aamir Khan was married to Reena Dutta, with whom he has two children, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan. The couple divorced in 2002 after 16 years of marriage.
He later married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005. The two welcomed their son, Azad Rao Khan, through surrogacy before announcing their separation in 2021.
As the controversy continues to generate discussion online, Aamir Khan and his team have not issued any official statement regarding the reported fatwa or the cleric's remarks.
