Shahid Afridi Calls to Drop Babar, Shaheen and Shadab After India Defeat

Shahid Afridi Calls to Drop Babar, Shaheen and Shadab After India Defeat

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has called for sweeping changes in Pakistan’s playing XI following the team’s crushing defeat to India in the T20 World Cup match in Colombo. Expressing frustration over repeated failures, Afridi suggested benching senior players Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Shadab Khan and giving younger players an opportunity in the remaining matches.

Speaking during a television discussion, Afridi said Pakistan must move beyond relying on established names if performances continue to fall short. He emphasized that the team needs fresh energy and confidence, especially with crucial fixtures ahead.

Call for Youth Over Experience

Afridi stated that if he were making the decision, he would rest the senior trio and trust emerging players in the next match. He stressed that younger cricketers waiting on the bench should be given a fair chance to prove themselves at the international level.

According to Afridi, senior players have received repeated opportunities but have not delivered consistent results in high-pressure games. He questioned the logic of persisting with the same combinations when alternative options are available.

Senior Players Under Scrutiny

Pakistan’s defeat intensified criticism of its experienced core.

Babar Azam, one of the team’s most reliable batters, struggled again against India. Chas ing a challenging target, he managed just five runs before being dismissed, continuing a modest record against India in T20 internationals.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, expected to lead the pace attack, had a difficult outing. He conceded 31 runs in only two overs, including expensive spells at critical stages of the innings, allowing India to accelerate and finish strongly.

Shadab Khan also endured a disappointing performance. He conceded heavy runs in one over and failed to stabilise the chase, scoring a slow 14 before his dismissal.

India Extend Dominance in High-Stakes Clash

India delivered a commanding performance to secure a 61-run victory. A blistering knock of 77 from Ishan Kishan helped India post a competitive total of 175. Pakistan’s chase faltered early and never recovered, with multiple Indian bowlers striking at key moments to bowl them out for 114.

The victory further extended India’s dominance in T20 World Cup encounters between the two sides and ensured India’s progression to the Super 8 stage.

Pressure Mounts Ahead of Crucial Matches

The defeat has intensified scrutiny within Pakistan’s cricket circles, with growing calls for strategic changes and improved execution. Afridi’s remarks reflect rising frustration among fans and former players who believe the team must adapt quickly to remain competitive.

With qualification hopes still alive, Pakistan faces a critical phase in the tournament. Decisions regarding team selection, strategy, and player roles could determine whether they can recover from the setback and remain in contention.
