Anil Agarwal, chairman of Vedanta Resources, spoke emotionally about the loss of his son, saying the tragedy strengthened his determination to continue working for India and its future generations.
Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2026, Agarwal said the death of his eldest son Agnivesh Agarwal forced him to make a difficult personal choice.
“Either I collapse or get up and go,” he said, reflecting on the moment that shaped his resolve after the tragedy.
Agnivesh Agarwal died at the age of 49 in New York after suffering a cardiac arrest while recovering from injuries sustained in a skiing accident.
The loss deeply affected the Vedanta chairman, who described the experience as one of the most difficult moments of his life.
Despite the grief, Agarwal said he chose to channel the pain into a renewed commitment toward building opportunities for young Indians.
During the discussion, Agarwal emphasised that India’s young population represents the country’s greatest strength.
He said creating opportunities for youth through education, employment and entrepreneurship must remain a national priority.
According to him, empowering young people will determine India’s economic and social future.
Agarwal also highlighted the need to develop world-class educational institutions within the country.
He said many Indian students still travel abroad to pursue higher education, which reflects the need for stronger academic infrastructure at home.
Building globally competitive universities in India would help retain talent and strengthen the country’s innovation ecosystem.
The Vedanta chairman noted that personal loss often forces people to re-evaluate their priorities.
For him, the tragedy reinforced the importance of contributing to society and working toward national development.
He said continuing to work and support initiatives that benefit young Indians became his way of coping with the loss.
Agarwal’s remarks at the conclave resonated with many attendees as he spoke about resilience in the face of adversity.
His story reflected how personal hardship can shape a broader commitment to public good, especially when channelled into long-term goals for society.
