Bangladesh Journalist Says She Was Threatened After Being Labelled Sheikh Hasina’s Aide

A senior Bangladeshi journalist has spoken out after receiving threats from extremist elements, saying she was falsely labelled as an aide of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina despite having no political affiliation.

In an interview with India Today, Naznin Munni, Head of News at Global TV Bangladesh, said she was targeted after being branded an alleged supporter of the Awami League. She stressed that the accusations were baseless and aimed at intimidating journalists critical of rising extremism.

Munni said journalists in Bangladesh have faced threats in the past, but warned that the situation has sharply deteriorated over the last two weeks. According to her, intimidation has become more aggressive, creating a climate of fear within the media community.

She described the recent threats as part of a broader pattern of pressure on independent voices, particularly journalists who do not align themselves with any political or ideological group. Munni said the labelling of journalists as political agents has emerged as a dangerous tactic to silence reporting and discourage scrutiny.

The incident has renewed concerns over press freedom in Bangladesh at a time of political uncertainty and heightened tensions. Media observers warn that continued threats against journalists risk undermining free expression and the public’s right to independent information.

Munni called for stronger safeguards for journalists and accountability for those issuing threats, stressing that journalism should not be equated with political allegiance.
