Bomb Kills Two Moscow Police Officers Near Russian General Assassination Site

A bomb explosion in Moscow has killed two police officers and one civilian near the site where a senior Russian military general was assassinated earlier this week, deepening security concerns in the Russian capital amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

According to Russia’s State Investigative Committee of Russia, the blast occurred when two police officers approached a man who was behaving suspiciously. An explosive device detonated during the encounter, killing both officers and a third individual. Authorities have not officially identified the third victim.

The incident took place close to the location where Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Russian General Staff’s army operational training directorate, was killed on Monday in a car bombing. Russian officials have alleged that Ukrainian intelligence was behind that assassination, though Kyiv has not commented.

Investigators said criminal cases have been registered under charges related to the murder of law enforcement personnel and the illegal trafficking of explosives. Emergency services and forensic teams were deployed to the scene following the blast.

Local residents described the explosion as powerful. One nearby resident told Reuters that the sound was similar to the car bomb that killed the general days earlier, while another said the blast shook her apartment building in the early hours.

Unofficial Russian Telegram channels claimed that the suspected bomber was among those killed and that the device was detonated when police attempted to question him. These reports have not been independently verified.

The blast comes amid a series of targeted killings of Russian military figures and prominent supporters of the war in Ukraine since the conflict began nearly four years ago. Ukrainian military intelligence has previously acknowledged responsibility for some attacks on Russian officials.

Meanwhile, Myrotvorets, a controversial Ukrainian website that lists individuals it labels as war criminals or traitors, updated its entry on Sarvarov to state that the general had been “liquidated.”

The latest incident underscores growing instability and heightened security risks in Moscow as tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to escalate.
